Spotting, Dripping, Holding
‘Sometimes, the body’s instinctive reactions come closer to our inner thoughts than expressions carefully reasoned out in the mind. Such unconscious state allows me to articulate my thoughts in a purer, more direct way.’
The three words in the title of this exhibition are all verbs, which relates to another identity of mine—as a dancer. Spotting refers both to a moment of fixation in dance and to the focal point of stage lighting; it is also the moment that illuminates my subconscious in my Lamp series. Drippingdescribes my relationship with oil painting as a medium. At first, facing it felt unfamiliar and disorienting, but because it is also an extremely inclusive medium, its fluidity and continuity give me a deep sense of reassurance. I often let my brush rest on the paper without lifting it; my body carries the brush, taking on my thoughts, emotions, and intention for me. The final word is holding. It can be an action, or a state that symbolises balance—much like the series ‘My Sylvia’. She, too, is a state of my inner world: often an indistinct figure, everything slightly veiled, even a little faded. These words, my brushstrokes, and my body all share a similar desire—to describe and express something. I cannot fully grasp it; perhaps what I can express at this moment is only a contour. I accept this blurred outline. It is my answer for now, and it is also the trace left behind by all of my actions.
